Which Mod-Chip Do I Need

Last Updated: (01-02-2009 at 12:16)

Over the last 2 years Nintendo have released 7 different chipset versions. Before you buy your mod-chip you need to know which chipset you have as most mod-chips will only work on cetain chipsets. There is only one sure way to know which chipset you have and that is to open you wii and find out BUT there is another method that gets it correct 95% of the time and that is to use your serial number.

It is recommended that you use all three methods below to identify which chipset you have.

Method one:

As a rough guide the table below will tell you which chipset is in your Wii

Wii Console Chipset type
Console Serial Code Range
Consoles Purchased From - to (est)
DMS, D2A & D2B
LEH100xxx - LEH134xxx
November 2006 - April 2007
D2C
LEH134xxx - LEH182xxx
April 2007 - May 2008
D2C-2
LEH182xxx - LEH199999
May 2008 - Sept 2008
D2E
LEH200xxx - LEH224xxx
Sept 2008 - Oct 2008
D2E With Epoxy Resin
LEH224xxx and above
Nov 2008 - Present

Medthod two:

Go to wiidrive.com {opens new window}

Enter your serial number and make a note of which chipset you have, if the pins are cut and which modchips work with it.

Method three:

Go to Nintendo-Scene{opens new window}

Enter your serial number and make a note of which chipset you have and if the pins are cut.

Results

If your lucky you will have something like;
A:D2C, B:D2C Pins not cut, C:D2C Pins not cut - where all three are the same
If this is the case then you can go ahead and order any modchip that fits your chipset

If your results are something like
A:D2B, B:D2C Pins not cut, C:D2B - where there is a difference
Then you have four options

1. Get your wii installed by a professional, they will open it and install the correct modchip for what they find inside.

2. Order a modchip that fits all three results (most chips will work with more than one chipset)

3. Open your wii and find out yourself

4. Take a lucky guess with 2 out of 3

Obviosuly options 3 and 4 are not recommended as they could result in either buying the wrong mod-chip or damage/loosing screws/parts due to leaving your wii open on the side until you mod-chip turns up.
